The Fifth Discipline

Senge's learning organization becomes concrete in Royal Dutch/Shell's attempt to replace a single oil forecast with multiple scenarios before the 1973 shock. The episode shows managers rehearsing futures that challenged settled assumptions, but later histories also expose what the celebrated learning story missed: macroeconomic consequences, the durability of producer power, and perspectives outside the oil company. The book's five disciplines are therefore best read as an intervention program, not an empirically verified organizational type.
