Democratic Kampuchea
From April 1975 to January 1979, the Communist Party of Kampuchea used forced transfers, cooperatives and worksites, controlled food, political classification, forced marriage, security centres, torture, execution, and genocidal policy to make survival conditional on a secretive party-state. A demographic reconstruction estimates a median 1.9 million excess deaths—21 percent of the population at risk—with a wide 95 percent simulation interval of 1.2–2.8 million; survivor memory and adjudicated crimes show losses that no organizational account can reduce to a single total.
What happens when an organization treats every independent relationship, institution, and source of knowledge as an obstacle to total political transformation?
