Microsoft during the Internet Explorer era

Between Netscape Navigator's rise in 1994 and the final antitrust judgment in 2002, Microsoft turned Internet Explorer from a weak new browser into a capable free product distributed through Windows. The same campaign used access to Windows, desktop placement, contracts, and technical integration to make refusal costly for Netscape, computer makers, access providers, developers, and users.

How did the owner of the dominant PC operating system turn a browser competition into governance over the channels by which browsers reached users?

Mozilla

Mozilla turned an open-source browser project into a mission-owned family of nonprofit and commercial organizations. Its legal stewards can direct assets toward an open-internet mission, while technical authority remains distributed and search royalties create a material dependence on commercial partners. A new nonprofit portfolio steward, Mozilla.org, became operational in June 2026.

How can a public-interest technology mission retain enough product, distribution, and revenue capacity to shape a commercial platform ecosystem?

Netscape

Netscape made the young web legible through a fast commercial browser, then discovered that the implementation layer could become both a path into an open protocol and a strategic chokepoint contested by a platform owner.

How can a commercial product make an open protocol useful at mass scale without turning implementation advantage into control of the commons?
