Innovation, entrepreneurship, and renewal
The Post-it Note spent years as a peculiar adhesive without an accepted use, circulated through 3M, met weak results in early market tests, and won a larger commitment after people could try it. The surviving accounts make innovation a contested allocation process, but they are retrospective and disagree on dates and test details; later theories of opportunity search, production learning, disruption, and customer validation remain comparisons rather than causes of the case.
Governing questionWhat evidence should move an uncertain invention from protected search to scaled commitment, and who gets to run the test?
The surviving chronology contains real conflicts
Spencer Silver's U.S. patent for acrylate copolymer microspheres was filed on March 9, 1970, and issued as U.S. Patent 3,691,140 on September 12, 1972. A later U.S. International Trade Commission decision identifies Silver as a 3M employee and says the patent was assigned to 3M.1 Those primary legal records establish a technical disclosure, inventor, filing date, and later assignment evidence. They do not establish when Silver first obtained the laboratory result or what problem the experiment originally pursued.
3M's corporate history and the Minnesota Historical Society date the laboratory discovery to 1968. Smithsonian and National Inventors Hall of Fame profiles date the adhesive story to 1970 instead.234 The supported core is therefore narrower than the familiar anecdote: Silver developed reusable acrylate microspheres before Fry's note concept, patented the chemistry in 1970, and circulated the result inside 3M while no accepted product use existed. The exact discovery year remains dependent on retrospective accounts.
The same caution applies to Art Fry's hymnal bookmark. Fry's Smithsonian account and the Hall of Fame profile place the episode in 1974; the Minnesota Historical Society chronology places it in 1973.43 The stable claim is that Fry had encountered Silver's adhesive through internal contact, connected it to a removable page marker, and learned from colleague use that a general note mattered more than the original bookmark. The reviewed sources do not settle the year more precisely.
Retrospective accounts agree that product development continued after the bookmark insight. They describe problems in coating, adhesive transfer, consistent tack, production, quality, packaging, and sales, followed by weak or mixed Press 'n Peel market tests in 1977.24 But 3M's own 2002 volume says four cities in one passage and five in another. It also describes both a Richmond sampling effort and the later Boise Blitz, while the current brand history and Minnesota public history foreground Boise.23
The more-than-90-percent purchase-intention figure is a 3M-reported result about people who tried the notes, not an independently audited sales measure. The accounts do not publish the questionnaire, denominator, sampling frame, city-level data, response rate, or actual purchases. They do agree that 3M moved to a national U.S. introduction in 1980 after the sampling phase.23
The chronology supports a sequence of changing uncertainties. It does not establish that persistence usually succeeds, that free sampling caused the national launch by itself, or that the same sequence transfers to products with different technical, legal, or human risks.
A product coalition sits behind the two named inventors
Fry's participant account says that manufacturing, quality, packaging, and sales problems required many contributors. The Minnesota public history names Henry Courtney and Roger Merrill for work that kept the adhesive on one sheet; 3M's volume names Bob Molenda, Geoff Nicholson, Joe Ramey, Shirley Tholander, and Jim Thwaits in management, technical, sampling, and sponsorship roles.432 The records therefore contradict a completed-in-one-flash account even though Silver and Fry remain the most visible names.
They still do not recover the whole coalition. Corporate and inventor histories select contributors retrospectively, say little about production workers and trial participants, and do not report how credit, workload, or decision rights were distributed.24 The patent identifies claimed chemistry; it is not a roster of all labor required to manufacture and commercialize a note.1
Arthur Markman and Kristin Wood use Post-it in their independent cognitive scholarship to distinguish a technical result from a problem-serving and implementable innovation. Their chapter is a secondary interpretation, not a new archival reconstruction, and its brief history relies on earlier accounts.5 It supports the analytical distinction between discovery, use, and implementation without supplying an independent estimate of 3M's internal program effects.
Internal presentations and sampling made an unassigned technical possibility available to people with different problems. That observation does not prove that 3M's reported “15 percent time” caused Post-it. The corporate history says Fry used such time and received managerial help, but supplies no comparison group, formal time records, or account of projects that used the arrangement and failed.2
Later innovation theories ask different questions
Peter F. Drucker treats innovation as purposeful search across several sources of opportunity in Innovation and Entrepreneurship, including unexpected success, unexpected failure, incongruity, and process need. The publisher contents and a Drucker Institute excerpt establish that conceptual scheme.6 The book appeared after the Post-it national launch. It can interpret attention to an anomalous adhesive and disappointing market test, but it cannot establish Drucker's influence on either decision.2
Toyota describes Toyota Production System through just-in-time flow and jidoka, including stopping when an abnormality occurs.7 That corporate account concerns production flow, defect exposure, and operating improvement. Placing it beside 3M's market sampling highlights a shared interest in earlier feedback, but the uncertainty differs: Toyota's stated mechanisms govern an operating production system; the sampling story concerns whether prospective users understand and value an unfamiliar product. No historical influence or equivalent method is claimed.
Clayton Christensen and Joseph Bower's 1995 article, followed by The Innovator's Dilemma, asks why rational resource allocation toward existing customers and margins can leave incumbents poorly positioned for disruptive change. Christensen and coauthors later warned that “disruptive” had been applied too broadly and bounded the theory to a process beginning in low-end or new-market footholds.8 The reviewed Post-it histories do not document such a foothold, an entrant challenging an incumbent, or a separate value network. Long internal gestation is not by itself evidence of disruptive innovation.
Steve Blank's Four Steps to the Epiphany separates customer discovery and validation from company building; Eric Ries's Lean Startup emphasizes validating an entrepreneurial idea through building, measuring, and learning.9 Both frameworks postdate the Boise account.2 They clarify why experience with an offer can test a different proposition from shelf exposure, but they neither invented the reported sampling effort nor independently validate its result. Their author and movement pages are primary statements of frameworks, not comparative outcome studies.
Adoption evidence does not answer every scale question
The reported market-test revision changed what people could know about the offer: recipients could handle the notes before answering whether they would buy them. The surviving accounts do not establish whether the response changed because of comprehension, reciprocity after receiving a free sample, selection, demonstration, novelty, or another mechanism.23 Nor do they describe consent language, demographic composition, accessibility, privacy, complaints, or compensation.
That evidentiary boundary matters when an experiment can affect health, credit, employment, education, public services, or ecosystems. A smaller or earlier test can limit exposure, but size alone cannot make exposure legitimate. The decision record must still specify who may refuse, who bears failure, what harms are monitored, who can stop the test, and what repair is available. Those are normative requirements proposed here, not findings from the Post-it histories.
The reviewed histories also do not provide a product-specific lifecycle assessment, production-worker account, supply-chain inventory, waste study, or distributional analysis. 3M's current brand history includes selected product and adhesive claims, but it does not allocate the original or later product's paper, adhesive, coating, cutting, packing, transport, use, and disposal effects across people or ecosystems.2 Missing evidence is not evidence of harm or safety. It is a limit on what “success” can mean.
Purchase intention can inform an adoption decision. It cannot by itself show that production is safe, labor is fairly organized, waste is recoverable, or scale is socially and ecologically worthwhile. Renewal therefore requires a new account at each transition: technical repeatability, use, manufacturing, adoption, service, repair, labor conditions, distribution, and material consequences can each stop or reshape the work.
Four product hypotheses remain unvalidated
- I13-P01 proposes assumption registries and learning contracts that name uncertainty, experiment, evidence threshold, budget, and decision date. Tests must measure decision-relevant learning, cost, timeliness, consent, shifted risk, and whether formal completion disguises an uninformative experiment.
- I13-P02 proposes separate discovery and execution metrics with explicit transitions. Tests must compare behavior and project movement while checking for vanity sandboxes, premature execution pressure, and indefinite discovery.
- I13-P03 proposes staged grants and protected exploration with defined operating interfaces. Tests must compare contained loss, autonomy, learning transfer, integration failure, funding bias, and displaced operational or safety burdens.
- I13-P04 proposes explicit decisions to abandon, pivot, scale, or integrate. Audits must connect accumulated evidence to the decision and later outcome while checking escalation of commitment, suppressed counterevidence, and harms to people affected by transition or closure.
The Post-it sources do not validate any of these mechanisms. Their retrospective story can generate hypotheses, but prospective portfolio tests, failed cases, comparison conditions, affected-party evidence, and abuse review are required before promotion.
Eight nodes and seven edges form a bounded map
The eight nodes separate case stages, comparison, and consequence. I13-N01 marks Silver's anomalous adhesive; I13-N02 marks internal technical circulation; I13-N03 marks Fry's removable bookmark and note use; I13-N04 marks the manufacturing and commercialization coalition; I13-N05 marks the mixed Press 'n Peel market tests; I13-N06 marks the sampling reversal attributed to Boise; I13-N07 marks competing theories; and I13-N08 marks commitment and consequence.
The case sources support I13-N01 through I13-N06 only within the date, source, and measurement limits stated above. The named theoretical sources bound I13-N07. I13-N08 is an editorial question prompted by omissions in the adoption record, not a measured Post-it outcome.12346789

Impact remains unclassified
No structured impact record is assigned. The reviewed sources establish a technical invention, organizational development effort, market tests, and a commercial scale decision. They do not support one net classification across inventors, managers, named and unnamed coworkers, production and distribution workers, sample recipients, customers, competitors, communities, animals, ecosystems, or future generations.234
The reviewed case records identify no death as part of the bounded Post-it account.234 That is not a claim that scaled effects were harmless. Human, labor, distributional, material, and ecological effects remain unclassified because the reviewed record does not measure them. The absence of an impact record means impact is unclassified, not absent.
Evidence still needed
- Contemporaneous laboratory notebooks, internal presentations, correspondence, budgets, market-test protocols, questionnaires, city-level results, and decision minutes that can resolve or preserve the date and test conflicts.
- Accounts from Courtney, Merrill, Molenda, Nicholson, Ramey, Tholander, Thwaits, production workers, sales staff, administrative workers, sample recipients, and unsuccessful internal innovators rather than treating Silver, Fry, or 3M as proxies for the coalition.
- Independent analysis of the “15 percent time” arrangement, including actual access, manager discretion, protected hours, portfolio failures, and outcomes for differently situated workers.
- Actual purchase and retention data that distinguish stated intention from behavior and test alternative explanations for the sampling result.
- Comparative studies separating opportunity search, production feedback, disruptive entry, customer discovery, and validated learning instead of treating them as interchangeable innovation practices.
- Prospective tests of I13-P01 through I13-P04 across portfolios, including abandonment, false confidence, consent, repair, appeal, funding bias, and shifted operational burdens.
