Te Kōhanga Reo

Te Kōhanga Reo made whānau the operating center of Māori-language renewal by surrounding mokopuna with te reo me ngā tikanga Māori and reconnecting them with kaumātua, kaiako, hapū, and iwi. A national trust helped locally governed language nests spread rapidly, while state funding and early-childhood regulation brought resources alongside administrative burdens and pressure to recast a kaupapa Māori movement as a conventional preschool service.
