Cherán communal government

The Purépecha community of Cherán K’eri turned neighborhood fire circles and four barrio assemblies formed during the 2011 defense against armed logging into a legally recognized municipal government, combining a community assembly, a twelve-person Concejo Mayor, specialized councils, communal security, and forest stewardship while remaining accountable to dissenters, neighboring localities, Mexican courts, public-finance rules, and unresolved gender and land-access inequalities.
