FedMart

FedMart began in a vacant San Diego warehouse in 1954, where Sol Price, Mandell Weiss, suppliers, workers, and government-employee members discovered a low-margin retail format through fights over fair-trade prices, assortment, pharmacy, and growth. The company later opened to the public and reached 45 stores, but Price's 1975 sale of control to Hugo Mann produced a board struggle, strategic churn, and costly expansion before 8,000 workers learned in 1982 that the chain would liquidate. Price, his son Robert, and former FedMart colleagues had already carried the operating lineage into Price Club; Jim Sinegal carried it separately into Costco before the two successors merged in 1993.

How does an operating doctrine survive growth and ownership change when much of it lives in the judgment of a founder and close-knit team?
