Switzerland

Switzerland's 1848 federation was a settlement imposed after the Sonderbund civil war, then repeatedly changed as defeated Catholic-conservative cantons, women excluded from the electorate, federal judges, initiative campaigns, and religious minorities contested who could authorize common rules. Referendums made opposition governable, but popular authorization did not guarantee equal standing.

How did military victors, cantonal minorities, excluded women, courts, and initiative campaigns keep renegotiating the boundary between local autonomy, popular rule, and equal standing?

United States

Reconstruction tested whether emancipation could become enforceable membership. Freedpeople organized for land, wages, family integrity, schools, votes, and office; Congress added federal rights and enforcement machinery; President Andrew Johnson, former slaveholders, courts, and organized white terror constrained or reversed that project. The amendments endured, but Colfax and the retreat from enforcement showed that a right without a willing executor could coexist with violent exclusion.

Could constitutional freedom become an enforceable local reality when state governments, former slaveholders, and armed white organizations resisted Black citizenship?

American Revolution end state

The post-revolutionary United States replaced a weak league of states with a federal constitutional republic that distributed federal authority across branches and supplied an amendment process while also protecting slavery and unequal political membership.

What institutional order resulted when revolutionary self-government had to acquire durable federal capacity?

American Revolution goal

A changing Patriot coalition converted disputes over imperial jurisdiction into a claim that legitimate government rests on rights, consent, and self-rule. Its committees, congresses, declarations, armies, and confederation made that claim actionable while restricting who could authorize power and imposing revolutionary rule on dissenting and colonized communities.

How did resistance to imperial rule become a claim that legitimate authority comes from a self-governing people?
