Across changing dynasties, imperial China's civil examinations made state-approved learning a competitive route to status and office. Staged tests, anonymity, transcription, and regional quotas constrained some forms of hereditary and personal advantage, but family resources, gender and status exclusions, ethnic hierarchies, imperial appointment, and a narrow curriculum bounded the merit they could recognize.
