Costco

From its first Seattle warehouse in 1983 through Jim Sinegal's 2012 chief-executive succession, Costco combined membership revenue, limited assortment, volume purchasing, and higher direct wages in a durable retail bargain. Company accounts and independent comparisons document thin margins, renewal, and comparatively strong direct-worker outcomes, while price spillovers, labor litigation, supply-chain investigations, and emissions accounting show that benefits do not reach every consumer, worker, supplier, or community equally.
