Ushahidi

Ushahidi began during Kenya's 2007–2008 post-election violence as a way to collect testimony by web and mobile phone and place dispersed reports on a shared map. It became an open-source civic-technology organization whose real mechanism is the human work of receiving, translating, categorizing, geolocating, verifying, escalating, and answering reports—work that can expose neglected events while reproducing the access and attention biases of its contributors.

How can people closest to a crisis make what they know visible quickly enough to matter without turning unverified testimony into false certainty or another extractive data system?
